Insulation 'can pay for itself in three years'

Published: 27/12/2007

Insulation

Having good loft and cavity wall insulation can save so much in fuel bills that it pays for itself in three years, the National Insulation Association (NIA) has said, news which may be of interest to those involved in the self build of their own property.

Chief executive Neil Marshall said that if half the £500 cost of installing adequate cavity wall and loft insulation was met by a grant, the savings made (£90 a year for cavity wall insulations and £100 for loft insulation) would pay for themselves in three years.

"And obviously, insulation is there for life, so you make those savings year on year," he added.

Mr Marshall said that such benefits meant people should not even need a new year resolution to undertake such measures.

He also advised that there were many "misconceptions" about the cost and time taken to install cavity wall insulation.

NIA figures state that 13 million UK homes are under-insulated, which costs an extra £650 million in fuel bills every year.
