Internal migrants causing housing shortages

There is a desperate shortage of available housing in the south-east of Britain due to internal migration, according to experts.
Research from Halifax, a mortgage provider, shows that the south-east may be following the model of the south-west region which has seen a population increase of six per cent in the last ten years due to internal UK migration.
House prices have subsequently tripled in the region according to the research and this house price rise is only surpassed in London and Northern Ireland.
Samantha Brown, spokeswoman for the National Housing Federation, said that a similar process is currently underway in the south-east.
She said: "I know that there is a desperate shortage of affordable housing in the south-east and that would suggest that yes, there are more people who are migrating inwards."
Overall the south-east has seen an influx of 2.25 million arrivals over the last decade with the lesser number of 2.09 million leaving the region for elsewhere in Britain.
