Land warning over Gateway plan

The government's Thames Gateway plan may experience some problems with brownfield site building, the Construction Centre UK has warned.

In its commentary on the government's regeneration plans around the country, which aim at creating three million new homes by 2020, the centre noted that developers prefer to use greenfield sites rather than brownfield ones.

It explained: "A brownfield site is disused industrial land and can be problematic in terms of removing contaminated waste and the location is not always a popular residential area."

Those seeking to self build their homes may consider whether the land they may buy to do so is a brownfield site and check if it has any associated problems such as pollution.

However, the Construction Centre added, there were many good examples of successful brownfield regenerations, such as Canary Wharf.

The Gateway may also suffer from lower environmental building standards according to a report from University College London.

It noted that the higher standards of carbon performance were not mandatory for the scheme, the Green Building Press reports.
