Lightning strike hits homes

Those considering the self build of their homes may consider seeking a plot in a location at low risk of lightning strikes.

The damage electrical storms can cause to property has been demonstrated by a number of incidents this week.

In Manchester, 20 homes in the Blackley district were affected yesterday evening when a lightning strike, believed to have been conducted via scaffolding, punched a hole in the roof of one house and left others with their phone lines and television cables melted.

Meanwhile in Essex, the Thames Chase Visitor Centre at Upminster was burned down in a fire believed to have been started by a lightning strike.

During electrical storms, lightning strikes the highest point, which is why taller buildings are equipped with lightning conductors.

Those seeking a plot for self build may look to find a location that is not exposed in this way.

If it is, fitting a lightning conductor may be necessary.
