Listed properties 'can still be altered'

Listed properties are not completely untouchable when it comes to making home improvements, the Listed Property Owners Club (LPOC) has said.
While it is true that many alterations are not permitted because of the status of listed buildings, according to the LPOC there are ways to "get around" regulations without actually breaking them.
Reversible changes such as adding loft insulation are among the options available to owners of such properties who want to make eco-friendly renovations, the organisation has said.
"Listed property owners are interested in [ecological home improvements], but sometimes it does prove very difficult because of the rules and regulations that surround listed buildings," said LPOC director Kelly Smith.
"Anybody who wants to do any changes first of all needs to get it approved with the conservation officer at the local council. But there are sometimes ways around it; if double glazing isn't allowed then secondary glazing usually is, because it's reversible and doesn't damage the property at all," Ms Smith added.
