London told to stop building skyscrapers

A story which may be of interest to DIY enthusiasts is that of the ongoing battle to curb the ambitious plans of property developers to build skyscrapers in London.

The Shard of Glass building has been approved despite dominating London Bridge at its 310 metre lofty height, but the United Nations'' world heritage committee has ruled that UK authorities must stop approving so many tall buildings.

So now the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has indicated that it will cut back on tall buildings in the boroughs of Southwark and Westminster while the UN wants statutory protection for the view from the South Bank of the Tower of London.

A statement from the UK culture department said: "The precise detail of the protected view is under discussion between key stakeholders and we will forward a plan that defines it as soon as it is agreed."

Other large building projects planned for the capital include twin 50-storey towers near Victoria station and the 180 metre high Beetham Tower on Blackfriars Road.
