Look in Suffolk for country homes

If you are looking for a traditional country home but need it to be affordable then searching in south Suffolk and Somerset may be a good idea, according to one country home expert.

Cluttons specialises in sales of country houses and Alexander Hunt from the firm says that there are certain areas of the UK where you can snap up a good value period home.

He said: "The home counties within 75 miles of London are very popular."

He added that Somerset and south Suffolk are good value compared to the more traditional counties of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

"Dorset is good value as well," added Mr Hunt.

If you are planning to renovate an old country home then it is important to remember that you should only take on the most complicated jobs if you already have some experience of restoration work, according to Country Life magazine.

Take some advice from experts such as structural engineers or architects and understand that there may be trouble and know it is part of the process.
