Many householders dissatisfied with new homes

A significant minority of people living in newly-built homes are unhappy with the standard of work that has gone into the construction of them, a new survey has shown.

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) announced the results of its third annual Customer Satisfaction Survey today, pointing to a satisfaction rate of 76 per cent with the quality of the home and 75 per cent being willing to recommend their builder to others.

However, the implication of such findings, which were similar to the 2007 survey statistics, was that many of the remainder were unhappy.

Among the findings showing that this was indeed the case for many, one in five were dissatisfied with the state of their home on the day they moved in, while 19 per cent said they were not happy with the standard of finish.

One way to make sure the standard of work is high enough is for would-be householders to go down the self-build route to ensure they can take full responsibility for meeting their standards and requirements.

Writing in Show Homes magazine, entrepreneur Eddie Shah was recently highly critical of the standard of British building workmanship.
