Modular homes 'becoming increasingly popular'

Published: 29/04/2008

Modular homes

Prefabricated modular homes that are quick and easy to assemble are growing in popularity, the director of a firm that specialises in them has stated.

John Fitzgerald of Spacebox said there were a number of factors which were driving this growing trend.

He commented: "They're cheaper, better designed and more environmentally friendly. Those are the main reasons."

Mr Fitzgerald added that it was the factory production of such buildings made them cheaper to build, while adding that the ease of construction got round the problem of a lack of skilled tradesmen.

Many of those thinking of self build could opt for a modular home.

Another modular housing firm, Yorkon, has quoted figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors to note that 96 per cent of modular homes were built on time and 94 per cent to the agreed cost, compared with 63 per cent of normal houses built on time and 49 per cent to contracted cost.
