Montrose leads northern Scottish price surge

House prices in Scotland increased as fast as those in the south-east during 2007, new figures have indicated.
Data from Halifax has shown that the two regions saw the joint-highest increases in average prices in Great Britain at 14 per cent, accounting between them for 13 of the 20 towns with the greatest price increase.
Top of all towns and cities for price rises was Montrose in Angus at 39 per cent.
The three Scottish towns with the highest price increases were all in the north-east of the country, with Peterhead and Inverurie, both in Aberdeenshire, coming fourth and eight respectively.
Greenock, on the Clyde estuary, was the other Scottish location to make the top ten, just behind Inverurie at ninth.
Halifax predicted last month that Scotland would see higher price growth than the rest of the UK in 2008 at four per cent, due to its greater affordability conditions.
