More green building urged

Both national governments and the European Union (EU) have been urged to do more to ensure greener homebuilding.

The European Energy Network (ENR), a group of energy advisory bodies across the EU, has said many EU states lag behind on measures such as the introduction of energy performance certificates, the Green Building Press reports.

ENR plans to release a report on the progress made across member states of the EU.

Any further plans made in response to this urging may have further implications for environmentally friendly self build techniques.

Philip Sellwood, chief executive of British ENR member the Energy Savings Trust, said energy efficiency was an area the UK could improve on, stating: "In the UK, the average home has the potential to save £300 per year by just installing the most effective measures such as loft insulation and modern heating controls."

The report added that this area has been given renewed urgency by rising energy prices.

In Britain a number of energy companies have put up prices recently.

Today the Times has reported that Powergen is set to become the latest to announce price rises next week.
