More homes 'will not solve housing problems'

Firstrung has said that plans to build new homes in order to solve the affordable housing problem will likely do no such thing.

Firstrung CEO Paul Holmes has said that the current financial climate would make builders less rather than more favourably inclined towards increasing the pace of housebuilding.

On top of this, governmental schemes such as key worker homes do not have sufficient "political will" behind them to make them succeed, Mr Holmes added.

"Without mass building of starter homes [such as that seen] with the repatriation needed after World War Two, it's impossible to build ourselves out of the problem we have to create affordable housing," Mr Holmes asserted.

"I don't think the will is there from builders because we shouldn't lose sight and forget that governments do not build homes, builders build homes and in the current marketplace builders are not going to build homes unless they can do it profitably," he added.
