More investment needed for brownfield sites

More money from the public purse will be needed to enable brownfield sites to be developed into land suitable and attractive for home seekers and self-builders, according to experts.
The Town and County Planning Association reports that current investment is not enough as some sites are harder to clear than others and require more complex cleaning operations.
Also there is the issue of neighbourhoods where sometimes it is the calibre of the area which is the issue for home seekers rather than simply the previous use of the land.
"We might need more comprehensive improvement in some areas to make, not just the site, but the whole neighbourhood a more attractive place for people to live, and that will require public investment," said Gideon Amos from the Town and County Planning Association.
The tax amount put aside for this development currently is not enough according to Mr Amos, especially as the government has put in place a target that 60 per cent of all new builds will be on brownfield land by 2008.
