'More land' needed for self-builders

The new planning White Paper must ensure that there is more land available for people to self-build their own new homes, according to one expert.
Stewart Bassley, the chairman of the Home Builders Federation, says that the planning framework needs to meet the needs of a modern Britain and that includes the provision of more homes to meet demand.
He welcomes the creation of an independent planning commission which frees up local authorities to speed up planning applications from self-builders.
"The measures put forward in the Planning White Paper should be viewed in the light of their contribution towards making more land available for new housing," said Mr Bassley.
"The government will need to be rigorous in ensuring that the detailed implementation of change in the planning system concentrates first and foremost on desirable outcomes."
Other key measures in the new legislation include the duty to involve local communities in planning and a removal on the current fees cap for planning fees.
