Moving home costs £16,000 a pop

The average cost of moving home in the UK is now £16,000 and over a lifetime, some two years of people's salaries is eaten up by the moving process, according to a new study.

Research by Abbey Mortgages shows that every Briton moves home between three and four times in their lifetime and this costs on average about £54,400.

This amount is estimated to be enough to buy a two bedroom property on the Costa del Sol.

"With the average Briton expecting to spend over two years annual average salary just meeting the costs of professional fees and stamp duty of their three or four moves, homeowners clearly need all the help they can get," said Nici Audhlam-Gardiner from Abbey Mortgages.

Consider self-building your own property if it seems that moving to one is too costly. Fees for estate agents and financial advisors can mount up whereas with self-build you can build your dream house to top spec within a reasonable budget.
