Newer boilers 'can help houses meet green targets'

Newer boilers are more energy-efficient than those of the past and can help homebuilders achieve green targets, it has been suggested.
Julian Mears, a spokesperson for British Gas, said that a new boiler can have "a huge benefit" when assessing a home's carbon footprint, which may be of interest to those looking to self build their homes.
"We know that round about 25 per cent of a household's CO2 emissions is really down to energy
and the more energy-efficient your boiler is, the less harm you are doing to the environment," he explained.
Mr Mears also advised that it is important for homeowners to get their boilers checked regularly, depending on how old it is, as newer models will need less frequent maintenance.
In January, British Gas announced that it was planning to develop household boilers that were powered by fuel cells, which could potentially cut CO2 emissions by up to 50 per cent.
