Nuclear power plans set back

Environmental campaigner Greenpeace has won a legal victory over government plans to build a nuclear power station because public consultation was not pervasive enough.

A judge at the High Court ruled that consultation had been flawed so another attempt must be made at it before any nuclear build can be considered.

Issues such as the disposal of radioactive waste and financial backing of the plant will thus be probed more deeply.

Alistair Darling, the trade and industry minister, said that simply isn''t needed since the first consultation was part of an ongoing process and it needs to move quickly so a decision can be made before 2008.

This is because the government deems a new nuclear plant extremely important because it would provide a low carbon energy source and would thus stop reliance on fossil fuels.

Sarah North, head of the Greenpeace campaign, said: "It''s stunningly obvious that there are more efficient, effective, safer and cheaper ways than nuclear power to meet energy demands and cut climate change emissions."
