OFT to contact new-build owners

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has announced that it will shortly contact over 1,000 new-build homeowners as part of an investigation into how the processing of purchasing such properties can be improved.

Owners of bungalows, flats and houses will be questioned over their experiences, with builders and local authority planners also set to be contacted in the coming months.

The review is being carried out because the OFT believes the house building industry has not fully complied with the Barker Review of Housing Supply 2004, which recommended that the sector introduce a code of conduct and increase customer satisfaction.

"For many people, buying a house is the largest purchase they will ever make and the study will look for ways to improve the experience of buying a new home as well as the range and quality of new homes available and the after sales service offered. We would encourage everyone who is contacted to take part," commented OFT senior director of markets and projects Heather Clayton.
