Older homes 'may not be as well insulated'

Older homes

Britons with older properties should have the cavity wall filled in order to save themselves money.

The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has said that while many new builds are better equipped when it comes to energy efficiency.

Loft insulation also comes as standard on newer properties, but should be considered for homes that have been built in prior to 2006, the EST added.

"Since 2006, building regulations for new homes stipulate that there needs to be 270mm of loft insulation," said EST energy doctor Rob Bell.

"Any home that has had its planning permission proofed from 2006 should have this, but anything back from there won't necessarily have the correct amount up there – you should go up there [in to your loft] and have a look.

"If your home is draughty to can draught proof it – if you have old windows you can pick up window sealants and draught proofing strips; as well as brushes for your letter box and around your door, and silicone sealant for your skirting," Mr Bell added.
