One in five 'getting a conversion'
One in five home owners is considering converting unused rooms in their homes into extra living space, according to a new report.
According to AA Insurance, property owners are increasingly looking towards home improvements as a cheaper alternative to moving to a larger home. By turning lofts into spare rooms, they gain extra space without the need for the expensive home-moving process.
Attics are the most popular spaces for conversion while sheds and garages are also very popular, especially for turning into work spaces.
Janet Pell, from AA Insurance, said: "Many homeowners relish turning unused or ugly areas of their homes into liveable rooms.
"It means more space for family and less dusty boxes and clutter."
The average conversion is estimated to cost around £10,300 but many people report they had a bargain at under £5,000.
Having an extra room can add thousands to the value of your property.
