Oxford's green belt is set to be built on following controversial new plans that intend to remove areas of land from the protected area, according to local media reports.

A series of recommendations released this week will include a review of the city's green belt, the Oxford Mail has said, with officials asserting that it will be possible to remove land from the belt without damaging the environment.

The paper adds that land wanted by Magdalen College for the construction of over 3,000 new residences will be among the areas that will be reconsidered.

Officials have denied that the plans constitute a major threat to the countryside.

"Proposals to have more housing around the edge of Oxford city is not a proposal to concrete over the green belt - it's an option to use up to one per cent, which is no big deal," commented Oxford City Council John Goddard, according to the Oxford Mail.

An increasing number of lifestyle buyers have pushed up the cost of land around the UK in recent months, it was advised last earlier this year.
