Period homes demolished for flats

Period homes in Surrey are in jeopardy because property developers want to pull them down and built a block of flats instead.
Residents of Hardwicke Road in Reigate have been angered and upset about plans by Oakdene Homes to demolish two large houses but the local government has now said that such destruction must take place.
Residents of the street fear for what this means for the future because flats will be out of place in such a conservation area.
Some 86 locals signed petitions to say they were against the erection of a three-storey block of flats on the site of the Edwardian homes.
They now worry that this sets a precedent to all housing developers who think they can just bulldoze down period town houses.
A small victory was won however because the original plan to build 14 flats was scrapped in favour of just ten flats.
Meanwhile supermarket Tesco has pledged to build 250 cheap homes for its workers in inner London. The development will have an ice rink and a leisure centre and the rent is promised to be cheap.
