Persimmon to spend more on land, green technologies

Britain's second biggest housebuilding firm has said that it is to focus more on both investing in land and environmentally friendly technologies.

Persimmon made the announcements as it revealed that its profits had risen by almost ten per cent in the first half of the year. The firm said that it would aid the government in its efforts to build zero-carbon homes and maintained that it was possible to both up the rate of construction and the use of eco-friendly building techniques.

Land purchase will also play a major part in the company's strategy moving forward, advised chief executive Mike Farley, with around £2 billion thought to be available to spend.

Mr Farley said that all new technologies would be tested thoroughly before being installed in new homes.

"We have a pilot project looking at all the new technologies to see what works and what doesn't. We don't want to build homes with untried technology that customers need to fix after a couple of years," he commented, according to the Guardian.

The Observer reported this weekend that just four lenders are currently offering 'green' mortgages, despite Gordon Brown saying in March that more should be introduced.
