The number of homes being built on brownfield land in Peterborough is exceeding national targets by over 20 per cent, it has been reported.

Peterborough City Council has said that over 82 per cent of the new homes in the region have been built on brownfield land, far ahead of the government target of 60 per cent.

The number of houses being built in the city last year has now reached an 18-year high of 1,265 – a 47 per cent increase on 2005/06 figures.

"These figures demonstrate that Peterborough is on an upward curve in achieving its house-building targets. It is a location where house builders want to invest and a place where people want to live," commented Peterborough City Council member John Holdich.

As much as a third of brownfield land may in fact be readily available for immediate development, a Brownfield Strategy Policy meeting announced late last year.
