Planning 'key' with ageing population

Published: 25/02/2008

Planning

The challenges presented by an ageing population highlight the importance of planning ahead, according to one industry commentator.

Gideon Amos, chief executive of the Town and Country Planning Association, welcomed government plans aimed at assessing the impact of an ageing Britain on housing.

The National Strategy for Housing in an Ageing Society is an initiative by Communities and Local Government (CLG) and Mr Amos believes the plans are "important" in the current environment.

He said: "To tackle the growth in households sustainably we must positively plan for housing that reflects the needs, aspirations and changing lifestyles of all of us."

Mr Amos added that CLG's strategy shows that housing in light of an ageing society is "a priority for all of us".

According to a recent report by the DCLG, failure to act on the issue of an ageing population and its effect on housing will lead to "significant fiscal impacts given the growing demographic pressures and poorer outcomes for older people".
