Planning permission changes could annoy the Jones

Changes to regulations affecting planning permission are set to "cause problems" with neighbours, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

NHIC director Andrew Leech said that the new laws on planning permission - which came into effect on October 1st - will see developments started that neighbours are not happy but will have no say on.

New rules will permit loft conversions and one-storey rear extensions up to three metres deep, among other amendments such as removing the need to pay costs to receive permission.

Mr Leech advised those embarking on extensions that will receive automatic permission to still at least seek permission from neighbours themselves to maintain "happy" relationships, even though they have no official say on the matter.

Extending a property has been described as an "ambitious move" by ourproperty.co.uk and the website advised those embarking on such a project to ensure that it adds functional living space.ADNFCR-833-ID-18829873-ADNFCR
