Planning reforms get the green light

Proposed reforms to the UK's planning system have been approved by MPs this week, potentially speeding up applications for a range of developments, which may include self-build projects.

Under the provisions of the Planning Bill, processes for approving the development of new infrastructure facilities such as nuclear power stations, wind farms and airports will be make quicker and easier.

Attempts by rebel Labour and opposition MPs to block a proposal to establish a new independent body to make important planning decisions was defeated in the House of Commons this week by 303 votes to 260.

Politicians had argued that ministers should retain final say over planning applications, but a concession had been included in the bill that will allow the government to choose potential sites for development.

Ministers have argued that big infrastructure projects and developments could boost the UK economy and property investors and developers could benefit from the changes.

The prime minister is expected to use the launch a new renewable energy strategy this week to emphasise the importance of new planning legislation to meeting targets to reduce carbon emissions.

Tom Foulkes, director general of the Institution of Civil Engineers, has welcomed the approval of the Planning Bill, claiming that it is "essential to secure the infrastructure the UK needs to maintain competitiveness and secure quality of life".
