Plymouth receives £3m for new homes

Plymouth, one of the areas recently mentioned by the government as a centre for redeveloping brownfield sites, is to receive extra funding amounting to £3 million to aid its quest to provide more affordable housing.
The government is to provide the money in recognition of the council's efforts in helping first-time buyers in recent months, bringing the total amount awarded to £24 million, 24dash.com has reported.
The council plans to build almost 30,000 homes by 2026 in order to provide cheaper housing to local residents.
"Local house prices may be well below the regional and national average but so are average incomes and that makes it impossible for many people in the city to get on the property ladder," commented council leader Vivien Pengelly, according to 24dash.
"The city has a huge need for more housing, particularly affordable housing, and our ability to meet that need is crucial to our strategic vision of becoming the economic powerhouse of the far south-west," Ms Pengelly added.
Last month Gordon Brown asserted that the three million homes the government plans to build on by 2020 will largely take place on brownfield sites.
