Poll finds most Londoners have low housing expectations

A poll about housing in London on the eve of the mayoral election has found that 71 per cent do not think whoever wins will have been able to make a major difference to the housing situation in the capital by the time of the next mayoral vote.

The finding came from a survey by property portal findaproperty.com, despite 72 per cent of respondents also saying that the mayor could have some positive affect on the issue.

In the poll, 50 per cent backed Conservative candidate Boris Johnson as the candidate with the best policies on the issue, compared with 37 per cent for incumbent mayor Ken Livingstone.

Mr Johnson's policies include building more family homes and curbing building on gardens and greenbelt.

Those living in London who can see no imminent improvement in housing there may decide to solve the problem using the self build method.

Ken Livingstone is attempting to gain a third successive term in office, the first of which he won as an independent rather than as the official Labour candidate.
