Poorly done DIY detracts from home value

Poorly executed DIY can significantly decrease the value of your home so renovation work on your property should always be done to an acceptable standard, according to one property investment education specialist.

Pierre Williams, the head of communications at Inside Track, said: "It is estimated that the average spend on updating an older home is approximately £22,000."

But he added that this assumes that the home improvement work is decent and incorporates the sorts of features that people are looking for in a home.

Brits are enthusiastic about DIY as a nation according to a report on consumer attitudes by data analysis firm Datamonitor. Research shows that people in the UK spend more time and money on maintaining their homes and revamping them than their European counterparts.

A study by Privilege Home Insurance has found that one fifth of DIY efforts in the UK take value from a property rather than adding to it. The firm recommends that homes are painted magnolia because this has proved to be the most attractive colour to prospective home buyers.
