Prescott speaks out for eco towns

Former deputy prime minister John Prescott, whose job role included planning decisions, has spoken out in favour of the government's plans to create ten new eco towns.
Addressing the Chartered Institute of Housing's south-east annual conference and exhibition in Brighton, Tony Blair's former number two said such towns had the potential to be become "places that are active, inclusive, safe, well run, environmentally sensitive, well designed, well built, well connected, well served and fair for everyone", the institute reported.
However, the decision to build ten new towns means most of the 60 applications will be refused.
Speaking at a recent conference in London Caroline Flint said the plans chosen would all be ones which met the highest environmental criteria.
This means that many people hoping to live in an eco home may find their nearest plan is turned down.
Some may consider creating their own eco home through the self build method as an alternative.
