Professional FTBs 'have window of opportunity'

First-time buyers who have good jobs or who have just graduated from university could stand to benefit as lenders look to target less risky borrowers in the new year, it has been suggested.

FirstRungNow.com has said that niche products such as guarantor mortgages or graduate mortgages could "come to the fore" now that the credit crunch is exerting its hold over the lending market.

Even the student debt commonly owed by most graduates would not be viewed too negatively in the grand scheme of things, the advice website added.

"Mortgage lenders are targeting better qualified people and lower risk people as a result of the mortgage crunch," said FirstRungNow.com managing director Helen Adams.

"The lenders aren’t necessarily put off by people being credit averse or being in debt despite the market conditions, because with a professional or graduate mortgage they can hope those debts will be paid off," Ms Adams concluded.
