Public oppose council tax changes

The proposed England-wide revaluation of properties in new council tax bands has aroused some intense opposition according to one expert.

Blair Gibbs, from the Taxpayers'' Alliance, which campaigns for lower taxes, says that his organisation has been inundated with calls from the public which are incandescent with rage at the prospect of people entering their homes "because as we know an Englishman''s home is his castle".

Council tax bills are based on bands from A to H and replaced poll tax in the early 1990s but now the government is considering adding extra bands to the top and bottom.

A new band taxing million pound homes would cover the top 11 per cent of properties and could yield up to £160 million extra for the total current council tax revenue of £22.5 billion.

The average council tax bill has risen from £525 to over £1,000 since Tony Blair became prime minister in 1997.
