Renovation

Those renovating their homes could not only save large amounts of money on energy efficiency devices but also do a lot of good for the environment, a green group has said.

A spokesperson for Friends of the Earth said that consumers need not feel "helpless" as fuel and food costs rise as there are many ways to save money.

She listed home improvement measures such as fitting insulation and installing boilers, which she stated can "save households hundreds of pounds every year - and cut carbon dioxide emissions at the same time."

The benefits of home energy efficiency may become increasingly well-received due to large increases in energy prices, with commodities such as gas becoming more expensive because they are linked to the price of oil.

According to the National Insulation Association, 40 per cent of all heat lost in the average home is through walls and lofts, while nearly half of UK homes do not have adequate insulation.
