Renovators given insurance warning

Britons considering renovating their properties should give consideration to increasing their home insurance once such alterations are complete, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has said.

The association has suggested that buildings cover is usually the appropriate form of insurance for changes to a property, but added that extra value should be taken into account.

Homeowners should also ensure that they have accidental damage cover before carrying out the work in the first place, BIBA added.

"Once you've done your DIY – assuming it's not a disaster and it goes well – then depending on what you're doing and the size of the project, you may need to reassess the value of your contents and/or buildings [cover], to take account of that," said BIBA technical services officer Steve Foulsham.

"If it's an expensive, state of the art new kitchen worth £10,000, then you may wish to increase your sum insured to cater for that," Mr Foulsham added.
