School goes green with solar panels

Seaford Head Community College is one of 100 schools in the UK that has received funding from a government eco-friendly renovation scheme.

Pupils at the college turned out for the official switch-on of their new solar panels, the Eastbourne Herald reports

The £20,000 panels were funded by both the Co-operative Group and the government's Low Carbon Building Programme.

Sunny Solar, one of the Co-op's climate change characters, was at the launch of the new environmentally friendly energy source.

One hundred schools across the country have been selected to receive grants to install solar panels.

George Steadman, manager of The Co-operative food store in Seaford, said, "This clean, silent technology will help educate Seaford Head pupils about the measures we can take to help combat climate change as well as reducing the school's reliance on fossil fuels."

St Chad's Primary in Cheetham, Manchester has also installed 24 solar panels on their roof, according to the Manchester Evening News. The school's new panels will provide energy to power computers and other electrical appliances.
