Scotland and south-east forecast to top 2008 house price rises

Areas with a large amount of new building of homes and infrastructure will be among the property hotspots of 2008, Halifax Estate Agents has predicted.

The list of the forecast top ten locations for house price growth includes Hackney in east London, which is tipped to do well from the new developments in the area prompted by the 2012 Olympics, while the Kent towns of Chatham and Dartford are expected to benefit from new high-speed rail links to London.

Liverpool is the one city in the north of England expected to shine, due to the impetus provided by its 2008 European city of culture status.

Halifax has predicted the four best-performing locations to be in Scotland, with Lochgelly top of the list.

Scotland and the south-east (including London) are expected to continue to enjoy the best growth by region.

Overall UK house prices fell by 0.5 per cent this month according to figures from Nationwide.
