Self-build 'bigger than largest commercial firm'

Self-build has taken off to such an extent that it is now responsible for one in eight of all new homes being built, Standard Life Bank has advised.
Writing for the Mortgage Solutions website, the bank's head of sales Jackie Moran has said that this is more than the contribution of any one residential property building firm, and added that over 20,000 self-build homes are currently being built in the UK every year.
This comes despite demand for such homes being twice as large, Ms Moran added, citing figures from Standard Life research showing that 67 per cent of advisers believe that self-building is becoming more and more cost-effective.
Alison Rolls of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, meanwhile, has noted that around one in every four detached homes built in the UK is now self-built.
Ms Rolls added that the popularity of property TV programmes made it "no surprise" that the popularity of self-building had increased, according to the Mortgage Introducer website.
