Self-build 'can help make home ownership more affordable'

Self-build properties can help make the goal of owning a home a more realistic target for many, one financial website has suggested.

Writing for MortgageIntroducer.com, David Murphy has advised that the tax breaks available to self-builders can reduce land costs, with total buying and building costs 'significantly' below those of a pre-built property once other costs are taken into account.

Citing Datamonitor figures revealing that there has been a 5.3 per cent annual growth rate in self-build properties, Mr Murphy noted that the market is now set to expand further.

Earlier this month it was reported that the rise in popularity of property TV shows such as Grand Designs had lead to an increased interest in the sector, with a number of specialist mortgage deals now available to those looking to build their own home, while a Gloucestershire school reported to be among those getting in on the act courtesy of a project to build a new school hall this summer.
