Self-build home makes £565,000 profit

A couple who invested in a self-build home three years ago have made a £565,000 profit on their property, it has been revealed.

Aaron and Raphaella Curtis said that they could not afford to purchase the sort of home that they wanted and so turned to self-build in order to meet their needs.

The couple purchased a piece of brownfield land for £60,000 and consequently built a £240,000 home based on environmentally-friendly principles.

Solar panels as well as increased levels of insulation and double glazing all feature as part of the home, which last year won an award for being the most eco-friendly self build home in the UK.

"This was a huge opportunity to undertake a unique project. We've created an environmentally-friendly and fun, living space on a brownfield site using local labour and materials," commented Mr Curtis.

"We designed it in a way that fits all our needs. It has got low running costs, it doesn't take much to heat," he added.
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society's competition, which awards £5,000 to the greenest self-built property, has just been launched for the sixth consecutive year.
