Self-build scheme wins award

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) has given an award to a self-build scheme designed to help regenerate part of a West Midlands borough, it has been revealed.
Sandwell Council was given a planning award for its Greets Green Housing Implementation Project, which combines private construction with residents' own ideas for their future properties, according to local media reports.
In turn, housing which is currently unfit for purpose will be replaced by new build properties that it is hoped will better serve local requirements, expressandstar.com has revealed.
"This award recognises the achievements of this project and the innovative way we are meeting housing needs," commented Bob Badham, local councillor and cabinet member for regeneration and transport.
"Building your own home is becoming increasingly popular, and there is a growing demand for sites to be made available for self-build schemes," Mr Badham said at the initial launch of the scheme last year.
"This is part of my policy to provide more self-build plots throughout Sandwell," he added.
