Self-builders advised to read manuals

Homeowners planning to improve their property should ensure that they consult the relevant manuals and DIY books before embarking on any work, one industry expert has warned.

According to Andrew Leech, technical consultant at the National Home Improvement Council, self-builders should understand how to approach these tasks before attempting them.

He stated: "When doing anything that you do around the house - whether it is putting up shelving, painting or wallpapering - it’s a good idea to get hold of an appropriate manual or DIY book."

Mr Leech added that it is important that those attempting some home improvements should actually read the advice in these books.

A recent study from Zurich Insurance revealed that 16 per cent of homeowners have had to call out a professional to remedy their DIY mistakes.

And the average cost of this stands at £280 a job, although some problems have cost inexperienced self-builders £2,000.
