Self build 'a better option after credit crunch'

The credit crunch has made self build one of the best options available to those wanting to acquire a house, it has been stated.
National Self Build & Renovation Centre managing director Tim Doherty said self build was "not so market sensitive" as commercial building, with no need to guarantee a sale at the end, while the present economic uncertainties were making more land available as some small developers were put off new projects.
As a result, he concluded, while the credit crunch was bad news for many, "self build, renovation, conversions and domestic extensions still remain accessible and in the current climate, are perhaps even more appealing."
Signs that the commercial building industry has seen a downturn have shown up in a survey by the Federation of Master Builders.
It showed four out of ten respondents in the survey reported a drop in enquiries, compared with a quarter saying there had been an increase.
