Self build 'a way to avoid negative equity'

Buildstore has stated that using the self build method to get on the housing ladder is a good way to avoid negative equity.
The firm has stated that a self built home can be worth a third more than the cost of acquiring the land, plus labour and materials, to build it, reports Yourmortgage.co.uk.
Spokesman John Hay said this made self build "a good way of creating additional equity in your home to guard against market downturns".
He added that people could also gain from the use of eco-friendly materials, the creation of a spacious environment and the pride in creating one's own living space.
The equity issue is a consideration that may persuade many this is the best way forward in the current climate.
Earlier this month the Daily Telegraph reported that data from banks and building societies pointed to a possible 75,000 repossessions taking place in the UK this year.
