Self build 'can lead us out of the slump'

Injecting elements of self build into property construction projects could kick-start the flailing housing market, one expert suggests.
Speaking to the Herald, Skye Homes founder John MacDonald suggested that introducing self build elements in this way could offer a more cost-effective option to many people.
"Work should be done on developing a formula that would see a developer or a housing association putting the infrastructure and services into a site, then allowing different levels of self build thereafter," Mr MacDonald explained.
He said people should have options allowing for approved contractors to do part of the work, such as ensuring the structure of the property is secure and wind and water tight, and then leave the rest to the owners.
Saying he knows of a great deal of people who would jump at such an opportunity, Mr MacDonald added that such a project could "create a whole new relationship" between the owners and their home.
This sentiment was recently echoed by Nicky Abraham, who opted for self build with her husband.
She told the Times that instead of selling the property on as they had planned, they decided to stay instead.
"When it's your own work, you can't help but fall completely in love with it," Ms Abraham said.
