Self build has part to play in eastern house plan, says TCPA

The self buildindustry has a part to play in helping to make a success of the new housing blueprint for the East of England, and Country Planning Association chief executive Gideon Amos has said.

New plans announced by the Department for Communities and Local Government today include an upwardly revised target for the construction of new homes in the region by 2021 from 478,000 to 508,000.

This target is part of the Regional Spatial Strategy, which also covers plans for economic development.

Reflecting on the role that eco towns will play in the process of adding to housing stock, Mr Amos said more than just development corporations were required to ensure they were built in a sustainable way, stating that it also needed "new collaborations of self builders, smaller developers and public sector enterprise to ensure these places in the East of England region realise their true potential".

In the announcement, communities minister Parmjit Dhanda had said that without the new homes future communities would have "nowhere to live".
