Self build 'much greener'

Self build

Self build has an inbuilt tendency to be much more eco-friendly than conventional building because those who use this method to obtain their own home seek to do more in this regard than developers, eco home firm Greenmoves has said.

Managing director of the firm Julian Brooks commented that this greener tendency occurred "because I think self-builders don't see those sorts of buildings being developed by anyone else and they have to do it themselves".

He said that because of this the self build market for green homes has "always" been strong and this will not change.

Mr Brooks predicted that developments to make homes greener in the future would not just include visually obvious elements such as solar panels but also items built into the structure of buildings, such as better insulation.

A survey by AMA Research last year found that the UK self build market was worth £4 billion in 2006.
