Self build provides Lakeland solution

A group of four families in the Lake District has got together to use the self build method as a way of overcoming the local shortage of affordable homes, it has been reported.

The Witherslack Community Land Trust has applied for planning permission to build four new houses, the North West Evening Mail.

South Lakeland Council will adjudicate on the proposals, which have already received a favourable hearing from the Lake District National Park authority.

Head of development for the park authority, David McGowan, told the paper: "We all know providing affordable housing in the national park is a high priority and our committee is doing all it can to approve applications like this."

He added that in the future the body would need to "focus" a lot on self build schemes such as the Witherslack project.

The news comes as Chester-based lender TMB has revealed a 15 per cent rise in new business in the self build market in the 12 months to January 2008, Introducer Today reports.
