Self build ranks high on dream home list

Nearly a fifth of Britons would like to self build their dream home, a new survey has revealed.

A poll by insurance firm Legal and General published today found that this characteristic was the joint-second most popular feature of such a home with 18 per cent mentioning it, alongside a detached home in the suburbs and just behind a character house in the country.

The Home Sweet Home survey also found that village life was becoming more attractive, being favoured by 25 per cent of respondents compared with eight per cent 12 months earlier.

Five counties shared the top spot for popularity, these being Cornwall, Devon, Greater London, Surrey and Yorkshire.

With four of these counties containing large rural tracts with many villages, self builders may find many opportunities to build in or near villages, thus combining many of the most desirable features listed in the survey.

A quarter of those polled said the dream home of the future would be more eco-friendly, another aspect that self builders will be able to address.

Last week eco-homes firm GreenMoves said self build was better than other construction when it came to making homes eco friendly.
