Self builders may sea advantage in coastal construction

Those considering the self build of their own homes may consider the benefits of doing so by the sea.

While buying and building on a plot of land near the coast may offer good views and access to the recreational possibilities on the shoreline and the deep blue sea beyond, research has indicated that the value of the self built home may also be greater.

A study by Hotproperty.co.uk has revealed that most buyers are willing to pay more for homes by the sea, with one in five willing to pay 20 per cent more and 52 per cent happy to pay an extra ten per cent.

This means those who eventually decide to sell on their self built home overlooking the sea should be able to command a higher price than if they built it inland.

Figures produced by HBOS this week based on Land Registry data showed that the seaside locations where house prices rose most last year where mainly in the south-west, with Rock in Cornwall leading the way with a 28 per cent rise.
